Webinar 1: Medical Cannabis and the Addictions
Professor Nicholas Lintzeris

There is increasing interest globally in the use of cannabinoids (most notably THC and CBD) in the treatment of a number of health conditions. Medical cannabis introduces a range of issues for the AoD sector that we engage with. This webinar will:

  • Provide a brief overview of medical cannabis in Australia – including regulatory models and products that can be legally accessed.
  • Examine the use of medical cannabis products in the treatment of substance use disorders – including cannabis, alcohol and opioid use disorders
  • Examine issues regarding cannabis use disorder in patients using medical cannabis for other conditions – including identification, prevention and management of patients at risk of, or who have cannabis use disorder related to their medical cannabis use.

Webinar 2: The Non-Medical Use of Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids: The Challenges Faced by the AoD & Medical Fields

There is increasing interest in the non-medical use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), with some suggesting we are facing a ‘looming public health problem’. The use of these and other performance and image enhancing substances pose some unique challenges for the AOD and medical fields.

This webinar will:

  • Provide an overview of the types of substances people use;
  • Outline the purposes for use and the contexts within which they are used;
  • Present the short- and long-term effects experienced; and
  • Consider how the medical community can engage this group.

Webinar 3: Depot Buprenorphine - On the horizon
Dr Adrian Dunlop

This webinar will:

  • Provide a brief summary of two depot buprenorphine preparations in the process of being registered in Australia: Buvidal weekly and monthly and Sublocade
  • Discuss current clinical trials in Australia with these medications
  • Discuss prescribing issues with depot buprenorphine preparations
  • Explore medium and long-term possible impacts on the opiate treatment system in Australia
